This 4-month internship is a totally new experience to me and I really enjoyed it.
The first thing I learnt is that remote internship is not that bad. As I mentioned in my first blog, this marketing research internship is remotely working and I received training at the beginning of projects and other communications were done through email. However, I found that if online communication are done efficiently, it does not necessarily need to meet in person. Actually, online communication is more efficient because we won't waste time talking about unrelated topics.
The second thing I changed my attitude towards data and numbers. Before, I thought I was not a data-oriented person because I could easily become impatience and could not focus on details. Data analysis asks for abilities to look into the number pool and find the rule out of it. Now I think I like it! I feel like I found my potential.
I am going to dig into marketing research in the future!

Thank You Letter
Dear FGI Research,
Thank you so much for giving me the opportunity to learn about research in marketing field. I know I was not a perfect candidate when I applied for it four months ago. You can hardly seen any working experience in my resume that seemed to help me in research and marketing. Though I did have statistic class at a master level, you probably have received applications from stronger applicants that boasted these skills. However, you trusted me and gave me this chance. Being trusted, I was confident that I was able to learn fast and do a good job. This level of confidence has encouraged me until now and it surely will support me in the future as well.
I appreciate that you teach me all the techniques and skills in marketing research. It was difficult to understand all those programs and terms for me at first as a layman. The collection of data sometimes drove me crazy, however now I learnt how to find out the significant points out of a messy pool of numbers and labels. Besides the skills, thank you for building the ability of being patience to details and regular duties out of me. I have never thought that I was able to sit in front of a computer and deal with numbers for two hours everyday. However, you helps me to find another me.
All in all, thank you for the rewarding experience that I was able to try something new and find the potential in me. I hope what I did as an intern contributed to your development too. Hope all the best in your future endeavor!
Best,
Qi Yu

Career Service Writing: Job fair on October 30.
On October 30, ASU downtown campus held a fall career and internship fair for students who are looking for internship and full time job. Around 80 companies and organizations has come here to look for talents.
I was surprised how diverse the employees were. There were government agencies, such as state government and the City of Phoenix. There were many companies from varied industry like news, broadcasting, entertainment, estate, electricity and so on. Companies like Allstate Insurance Company, Danny's Family Companies, Yelp, Inc. were there. Of course, there were also nonprofit organizations, such as Help International, Valley of the Sun United Way, Mayo Clinic and The Phoenix Symphony. Though there were a number of employees in the fair, as a public administration and nonprofit student I was a little disappointed to see the small number of nonprofit organizations there, which was the main reason I left the job fair early.
As far as I have talked with the nonprofit organizations at the fair, most of them were looking for volunteers and internship for the winter and spring semester. It seems that most of them were really well-organized nonprofit with years of history, which I think was good and beneficial for students like me who was going to step into the professional career in a few months if I could have a chance work with them when I was still at school.
A random thing happened on the fair that I wanted to share was about my name tag. Because I was in both programs of master of public administration and nonprofit leadership and management certificate, my name tag only showed the certificate, which I think was really cool and I felt good with it!

Free writing: Volunteer at Feed My Starving Children
Last Saturday, I volunteered at Feed My Starving Children helping out packing food for kids overseas! WOW! Two amazing things I want to say at first I show you how the volunteering went on.
First, I was amazing that our class project group made the efforts to come here to volunteer just because we were going to write a paper about this organization. I like how people try everything they can to accomplish something, which is a spirit I have not seen much in China.
Second, the volunteer experience was amazingly easy, fun, and full of love.
Now let's move to the volunteer part. I might have too much to talk about it.
This packing event happened at at a local church in Mesa, Love of Christ Lutheran Church. Surprisingly, people coming to volunteer varied from middle school students to retired couples.
After we checked in, everyone get a headgear to prevent our hair from dropping off. No necklace and bracelet is allowed during packing food. After everyone set up, we attended the orientation.
See how cute everyone look in the headgear. They did a good job in orientation telling people their mission, what they are doing, where the food is going, and what impact it has.
Here is a picture showing a staff member was demonstrating everyone how to team up and pack the food package. There should be at least 6 people in a group, one putting vitamin and protein in to the bag, one putting rice and grain into the bag, two people holding the bags and weighting them, and the last two people sealing the bags.
See our working station!
This is my project group and we had 9 boxes food that are sending to Philippine to help children suffering typhoon.
They also has a small marketplace selling bags and bracelets making by women in rural places. One of the amazing thing is that they put the maker's signature on the price tag so you can keep them! I like it so much that I bought a bag for myself!

Free writing: Nonprofit Conference on Sustainability Strategies
Last Thursday, Nov. 7th, the Lodestar Center held the 21st Annual Nonprofit Conference on Sustainability Strategies. I am so lucky to have the chance to be volunteer for this conference and attend some sessions.
Nearly 25 innovative and informative workshop sessions, interactive discussions and impactful networking opportunities comprised the recent "Solutions: Mission, Strategy, Impact" themed Annual Nonprofit Conference on Sustainability Strategies, presented by the ASU Lodestar Center. Participants were exposed to a variety of innovative solutions to common problems faced in the nonprofit sector, and gained tools for finding new ways to approach and solve their organization's challenges. (https://lodestar.asu.edu/conferences/2013-conference).
One of the session is really interesting talking about how to involve everyone at everywhere at every time. It talks about how to turn everyone you meet into your funders and donors. It tells about how to use the "elevator pitch" to sell your organization and how to impress people with your uniqueness.
For me, this is a chance to observe how nonprofits here get together, learning and discussing issues. It has been really rewarding and eye-opening.

FGI research and public service
FGI is a marketing research company that serves a diversity of clients. Based on its research and marketing professional, FGI focus helping personal and organizational success that relies heavily on serious market research.
Dealing a lot with data, the CEO David Wilson says that FGI believes that market research is an art in science understanding how you can create a better world. At its core, market research seeks to service people, create better service and produce that change and improve people's lives. When you commit great market research, it means that you care enough to stop and listen to the very people who buy your products, who talk about your brains, and who feed your family. It means first you seek to understand. However, a good market service is more than listening. It also means to put the insights into action and make the action counts.

Free writing: cooking wings
Yesterday, I tried for the first time after I came to the USA to make wings using an oven. Because in China we do not use oven in family cooking as much as people do here, I felt so excited that I was going to learn how to use oven to make food and it turned out that it was not so hard!
The wings I wanted to make was Buffalo wings. The first the step was to make sure the wings were full of spicy flavor. Put flour, salt, red pepper, and garlic powder in a bowl and mix them together. Then put the wings in and coat the with the mixture evenly. Then Cover the bowl and refrigerate it for 1 h -------This is the ideal process. However I made a mistake that I put the wings in first then add all the flour and seasonings, which turned out to be not evenly on the wings. :(
The second step was to make the spicy baking sauce. This step was easy. Melt the butter in a pan and then added hot sauce, garlic powder, and black pepper. Mixed them thoroughly. Let it cool down a little bit, then ready to go!
The third step was to bake them! Before place the wings on the baking sheet, make sure you dip and coat them in the mixture sauce you just made! Preheated the oven to 400 degree F and then put the wings in! Baked them for 40m and turned them halfway so each side was cooked!
Ready to serve!! Yummy! I will try more things in the future!

Free writing: value on arts
Today's class brought up a really interesting case: should museum report the value of arts in their financial reports. This topic raised a lot of discussion about how to place value in nonprofit sector and arts.
Some said from the artist's perspective, it is inappropriate to give a price to a piece of arts because they represented the historical, artistic and sometimes humanistic value that were hardly can expressed in monetary unit. Also, thinking about the artists who put their thoughts, time and efforts in one piece of arts, it would be irrespecutful to have a price for it.
Some said in practical it was hard to appraise the value of arts. In most cases, those arts who were auctioned always went with higher and higher prices. As special goods, the more time a piece of arts stays, the more expensive it will be.
On the other hand, some argued that asking museum to report how much value of their arts was responsible for the public and increased the transparence of the organization. It prevented some organizations who had a lot of arts donations to report a low value in their financial documents.
Some also believed appraise arts before hand will be a good way to claim for compensation if the piece of arts were stolen or damaged. An official appraisal will give the museum the proof of the monetary value of the arts to have a clear clue how much to claim when a theft or damage happened.
Anyway, this controversial topic is on going. There is no certain answer for it.

Free Writing: Hiking to South Mountain
Hiking in South Mountain is definitely a must-to-do in Phoenix. Actually I have been to South Mountain once and my friends and I drove up to the top during the daytime. Therefore, this time we decided to do something really different: hiking up at night, right after the sunset.
What surprised me was that so many people were still coming to South Mountain at night no matter they were driving or hiking. Thinking about this beautiful weather and temperature, no wonder everyone wants to go outsides and do something fun. Though the park was closed, the gate and facilities were still working. We could see clearly where the trail was.
For the first time hiking in South Mountain, I was excited and nervous because I did not know any trails. Luckily, my friend hiked here once sometime ago and he still had a sliver of memory where the trail was. When we started hiking, I found that the trail was a little bit different from what I thought. I thought the trail might go into the mountain but in fact it went all the way along the driving road. Remember to bring a flashlight with you, cause there were a lot of small rocks on the trail that might make you fall. It was funny that in the dark I sometimes thought the shadow of saguaros was a person standing there. Creepy!
The South Mountain oversees Phoenix, and it was especially awesome when I could see the lights of the whole city! What a pity that my iphone cannot take the beauty of the city.

Free Writing-Trip to Las Vegas
Las Vegas looks the way you'd imagine heaven must look at night. ~Chuck Palahniuk
This is how I think about Las Vegas before I went there. Though I have been there once last winter, my Las Vegas experience started this time.
There is my favorite cuisine in this heaven. It has super authentic and delicious Japanese food. Though it may feel strange to have Asian food in a American city, Las Vegas is famous for its diverse and all kinds of possibilities. Japan and everything about Japan interest me, so Japanese food is on the top of my to-do list in Vegas. We found a Japanese restaurant called Sushi House Goyemon. It has Sushi buffet so we can have all kinds of sushi and ogiri.
In this heaven, lights make the night bright! I have to admit that Las Vegas makes every sense when people call it "Sleepless City". My friend and I walked along the Strip to see all those famous casinos and see how people enjoy themselves even without gambling. The city brought the world with it. Even it was midnight, still a lot of people went in and out of the casino and malls. The night never come and the day never ends.
In this heaven, people love shopping. It is interesting to see every casino has a big shopping mall. Even though most of the shops are the same, it does not make people feel less like to shopping. When I walked around the Strip with the Victoria's Secret's bag in my hand, more than 4 girls asked me where they could find this shop.
In Vegas, I like to guess where this people might come from and think about why this city attract so many people to come just just for fun! Still seek for the answer.

Leadership Thinking
Leadership has been a topic as long as human beings began to talk and write. Many thoughts about it appear in literature. Though I am not sure how to organize my words to give a definition of leadership, a leader first should definitely be a person leading by his own action.
There are has been too many people who talk more than doing things but act like a leader. When I was in my freshmen year, I joined a committee of a student government. The committee director was a 'leader' because of his status but he failed to do what a leader should accomplish. He was always assigning all the tasks to every committee members while he was doing his own stuff without participating in the work. At last, he failed in the next selection because no one thought he did a good job in his term.
Second, leadership also means influence others by spirit not power. Leaders motive others by spirit while managers get people by power. I will be very glad to follow a leader out of my hear because I believe what he/ she believes. I may get things done because of work and power, which does not mean I enjoy or like it. This is a huge difference between leadership and management.
A famous quote from Lao Tzu, a Chinese philosopher living about 2600 years ago, explains leadership that I like most:
“To lead people, walk beside them ...
― Lao Tzu

As for the best leaders, the people do not notice their existence.
The next best, the people honor and praise.
The next, the people fear; and the next, the people hate ...

We did it ourselves!”

Interview with my supervisor!
Though my internship is remote at home, I met and talked with my supervisor, Janet, at the beginning of my internship. We made our meeting at a Starbucks by Tempe campus, so the whole meeting was casual and informal, feeling like chatting with a new friend.
Of course, our conversation began with introducing ourselves. Janet have been working for this company for 4 years remotely as a marketing analyst. She really loves this job because she could move from east coast to Arizona without losing her job! I think it is amazing to see how telecommunication techniques help people working regardless of geographic distance and gaining more freedom, rather than bonding to on location for several years and losing a desired job if he or she wants to move. As she came from east coast, I have to say that she talked really fast and sometimes I had problems catching her. Yet, she was nice enough to slow down her talking for me.
Besides, she talked a lot about the work and internship. Since she has been working in the marketing industry for years, she told me this work asked for people who was able to look into details and handle numbers. Most of the times working with analysis and research required one to find problems and rules out of a welter of numbers. If someone cannot be patient and calming down, it would be really boring to do this job. This is also why I enjoyed this internship, as I like the feeling to find order out of disorder.
Also, we talked about my background. She was interested in why I came all the way from China to USA for education. I told her it was because USA had more experience in nonprofit management so I could bring what I learnt here back to China some day. She said she would love to visiting Asian countries in the future and it would be a very different and rewarding experience.
It is always nice to communicate with my supervisor about internship and other topics, no matter it is in person, over the phone or emails. I can learn a lot from her I believe!

Weekend Retreat (Free Writing)
This weekend was amazing! I went to a retreat with some friends, south to Tucson, for two and half days. The whole retreat was a surprise to me. At first, my friend just asked me "do you want to go camping with me this weekend", and I said yes though I had no idea where we were going, who we were going with, and what we were going to do.
The whole retreat feels like unplugging from the world. We were at the small wood by the Parker Lake, living in cabinet and without Internet and mobile phone signal. There was not phone calls, no text messages, no emails, no video games, no Facebook and no TV. I did not know everything before I went there, or I would refuse my friend and lose a chance to enjoy purely friendship, myself and the nature. Disconnecting with the rest of the world feels like flying in the sky like a bird, seeing what I have done before and cannot help laughing, but knowing I need to go back to the earth eventually.
On the first I got up around 8am, so I got a chance to walk around and explore the place before breakfast at 9:30. When I walked around, I could see clearly how grasshopper jumped around, how breezed moved the cloud and grasses, and how the sunshine brightened the trees and left shadows behind. In the afternoon, things became even more cheerful. My two great friends and I sat on the bench under a tree and sang songs or melodies we have remembered since we were young, carefree and joyous.
It is sometimes good just to be alone and focus freely and innocently on simple things, I think.

Chinese Mid Autumn Day! (Free writing)
As a student coming from China, I am always glad to introduce my American folks some thing we do in Chinese culture!
Last Thursday was Mid Autumn Day (中秋节), a major festival is in China besides the Spring Featival. In lunar calendar, this date was August 15th, which changes every year in solar calendar but usually happens in late September. It is said that on this day the moon is with its perfect roundness and brightness in the year. All family members should get together no matter where you are. However, this is my second Mid Autumn Day when I was not with my family, so I felt a little bit homesick and sad.
In the picture below is a poem written by one of the most famous poets in Chinese history, Su Shi (苏轼) who lived one thousand years ago. This poem was always remembered by Chinese people not only because it is beautiful words but also it expresses exactly what we think when we are not with family.
Here is an English translation of this poem I found on Wikipedia:

When will the moon be clear and bright? With a cup of wine in my hand, I ask the blue sky what season it would be up the heaven for tonight. Oh Moon, how I wish to get closer By riding on the breeze. Yet I fear your crystal and jade chateau, Are much too high and cold. So, let me just dance here with my moonlight shadow. Rounds and rounds, my red mansion, till you shine on my silk pillow, Sleepless, but bearing no regrets Blame not the full moon when people has to apart Sorrow or joy, be near or far, Things happen like that, and we still believe in fate. Toast to you, we are all be blessed Though distant away, we look at the same moon And in that way, we have never been apart. | |

My October is going to be crazy, excited, and a lot of new things is waiting me to explore!
On the first weekend, South Mountain.
This is be my officially first hiking trip to South Mountain and see sunset! I have been to the top of South Mountain once last semester but we drove up there, so this time I decided to hike up and see what I can encounter!
On the second weekend, OktoberFest, Tempe Town Lake.
I have never been or heard about this event before so it is a totally new thing for me. It is originally a 16-day festival celebrating beer held annually in Munich, Bavaria, Germany. It think all this is about is to hangout with friends and get beer!
On the second weekend, Grand Canyon and Vegas.
Fall break begins at this weekend. I will enjoy a road trip to Grand Canyon and Vegas with friends! Go, go, go! Though I have been to these two places before, I definitely would like to see the beauty of Grand Canyon one more time. And, what can you expect more about Vegas, let's get wasted!
On the third weekend, let me have a rest!
On the fourth weekend, Lion King, Gammage.
When I was in NYC, I did not have a chance to watch this broadway show. Now I definitely need to catch the chance to watch it here!! I am a broadway show fan!!
How about your October? Any exciting things?

Career Service: International Student Career Conference
As an international student, I always feel hard and pressure to find a job in USA. No matter this is because language barriers, culture difference, or Visa issue, the fact is that when domestic students have a higher chance to get a job than international students. Therefore, thank for Coalition of International Students, a career advising conference, International Student Career Conference, specifically aimed at international student took place last Friday!
The conference started with an amazing speech of Kevin Burns, a professor from W.P. Carey School of Business. He introduced some key concept in career market of USA that might be unfamiliar with international students, which was really helpful! USA job market emphasize communication, giving out your direct feeling, and do not hide anything. Be honest, and admit something you do not know. This is different from how we Chinese do. Chinese tend to hide their true feelings if they think their thoughts might harm their future or their job.
Kevin also said networking was a critical way to build professional connections. The more you go out to know people, the more chance you might get. 80% jobs are not publicized and only spread in professional network. These ideas are important in a way that they ask international students to overcome their shyness and comfort zone to meet more domestic Americans.
Following Kevin's speech, it was a speech by Gunhee Park. He is a Korean students who came to USA in high school. One of his idea was really inspiring that as an international student, we already have some competitive qualities that domestic may not have, such as courage to leave your home country and start a complete new life alone in a foreign country.
It has been a rewarding experience to attend this conference, to meet people, to learn new ideas, and to gain courage that I can do better!

One day working as a intern
My internship may be a little bit different from my classmates, because it is remote. That means I do not need to go to an office everyday and it is more task-orientated. This is actually my first time to do a remote internship so I just feel "Wow, the world is so small."
On my first day, another intern and I needed to receive training in order to start our data analysis project. The whole training process demonstrated how telecommunication hi-tech enabled people to meet virtually online even though they were geographically distant. There were in total four people participating in the training: one training staff member, our supervisor, and two interns. The person who was going to train us was at the headquarter located in North Carolina, and my supervisor was at her home in Mesa, AZ, and I was at home in Phoenix, though not sure where the other intern was but surely somewhere by his computer. We were connected by conference call using our cellphone, and thanks to a software, everyone was able to see the trainer's screen and how she was operating. This was really helpful because we were more focused on the training content without distractions. However, the disadvantage was that we cannot see each other.
As an international student, the most interesting thing is about the time difference here. The scheduled training time was 1 to 2 at east coast time, which was 11 to 12 in Arizona time. I did not realize this at first. When I received the calendar saying it was from 1 to 2, I did not notice this was east coast time. Luckily, my supervisor clarified this to me or I might miss the training.
Being a remote intern has a lot of flexibility and fun. This is a typical day showing how everyone is connected to each other through the online planform.

Trip to AZ Human Society (free writing)
As a nonprofit concentration MPA, I always find that it is rewarding and interesting to visiting local nonprofit organization. Upon a request for one of my nonprofit course, my friend and I went to AZ Human Society this Saturday and attended the foster orientation for people who would like to volunteer to foster puppies at their homes.
The adoption center is located in the Sunnyslope Shelter, 1311 W Hatcher Road. The volunteer manager, Sharon, presented all the information we need to know, like organization mission, vision, history, and how to foster a puppy. In total, 7 people went there and it was interesting to see only one of us was male. Hope he did not feel too lonely in the orientation. :)
One of the highlights during the 3 hour orientation was the shelter tour and everyone got a chance to see closely all the animals. In AZ Humane, most of them were injured and abandoned cats and dogs with some little critters. I had a hard time to walk through the shelter where we saw all the adoptable cats and dogs. No one can stay calming down when you see all those cute and poor animals waiting for a home. Especially we were a group of girls and basically every one came back with tears in eyes.
However, I think too much visiting may make these animals nervous and freighted, especially for those injured and mental-ill ones. They probably prefer a quite place to recovery and wait for a new family and parents.
See this little cut puppy! I am sure you will like it!

What is my internship about (Introduction of internship and organization)
I am going to work as a market research intern for FGI research. In this internship, I have the opportunity to apply data analysis, quality control and other analytic skills. The best thing about this intern is that I can work remotely so I do not need to go to the office everyday!
A little bit about FGI Research: http://www.fgiresearch.com/the-team/about-fgi-research/
At FGI Research, we specialize in serving you, a research or marketing professional, who relies heavily on serious market research for your personal and organizational success. Unlike many of today’s tool-based, do-it-yourself companies who create more work and uncertain outcomes, FGI Research is accountable for your research deliverables.
With our full service market research, marketing science, and products like online surveys, custom-built consumer panels, and online communities, we use quality data to solve your “right now” problems or to assist in your long-term goals.

Gain market share, monitor satisfaction, test new products and services, collect data, get better business ideas, maneuver around your competitors, or launch a targeted marketing campaign. We’ll put our more than 30 years of market research experience to good use.
I have a potential group of clients from both private and public sectors, which makes my internship a combination of opportunities to see detail market data of both sectors. I believe for my future career, I can transfer the analytic skill set to nonprofit sector. Marketing is also a big part of nonprofit besides its mission and managerial skills has common characteristics among different sectors.

Think about tradition (Free Writing)
Yesterday was Jewish New Year (Rosh Hashanah). To be honest, as a Chinese I have no idea what it is about and what it represents. However, two different cases happened, making me thinking about traditional holidays in contemporary life.
In the morning of yesterday, one of my Jewish friends said his mother asked him to go back home for Jewish New Year but he had classes so he could not make it. At that night, in a class instructor said one of classmates was absent because of religious observation which was Jewish New Year. Interestingly, my friend and my classmate chose different approaches in case of their traditional new year.
I am not sure if this is a sign that tradition holiday is fading away or not, but it is true that less and less people care about old traditions. Though I cannot say that everything about tradition is good, I just feel that we cannot let old ways disappear. At least we need to leave something to the future generation even though it is just a matter of form.

Internship Begins!!
This is a blog that I set up for my internship, which is part of my MPA program. It is really excited to start my internship in this fall.
A little bit about myself: I came from China last year and right now is in MPA program with nonprofit emphasis. I have a passion in changing the relationship between nonprofit and government in China and social entrepreneurship, which is also the reason I studies in USA where there is a lot of experience and examples to learn from!
However, this internship is not directly related to nonprofit sector. This internship is about doing market research. Some may be confused by my choice of internship. Actually, my thinking is market research skills would be helpful in my future effort in social entrepreneurship. Also, since I can learn nonprofit knowledge in my academic program, I might learn something else in practicing internship to expand things I am able to do!
I have three goals that I would like to achieve in this internship:
1, be able to conduct quality control
2, be able to obtain analytic skills
3, be able to manage time more efficiently.
